Musings of a Madman

Why the title?  It all started with a chance meeting, and the opportunity to help a stranger and a response that left me feeling the need to write about it.

Pack howlings following the murder of a serving soldier in Woolwich

Paying their disrespects

On Wednesday a serving soldier - now identified as Drummer Lee Rigby - was murdered in broad daylight outside Woolwich barracks in a brutal and grisly attack by unhinged fanatics.  Within hours of the horrific event photos and banners started appearing across Facebook reading "they killed one of our own" and "vengeance will be ours".

Really?  Precisely who will exact revenge?  Upon whom?  And on whose behalf?  Who are these faceless ones to be claiming the right of vengeance?  Who is one of their own, and thus by implication not?  Why did they not claim the right of vengeance when a little boy was knocked off his bike by a careless driver, and died in hospital?  Or when a doorstep thief entered an old man's home, and beat him into unconsciousness to die whilst ransacking his home?  Or when an estate agent who knocked over a pensioner and killed her outright whilst racing on urban roads?  To these people I ask why are those victims also not "one of your own"?  Where is the compassion for the man whose life was cut short, or for the devastated family left to mourn him?

And who exactly are "our own"?  Clearly it is not a question of nationality.  No-one knew about nationalities at the time, although no doubt assumptions were being made by some for the purposes of an early propoganda strike.  There was, however, one thing that was publicly clear - the apparent culprits were very clearly not white.  And of course this is the key to answering all the questions.  The little boy?  He was of Asian parents.  And in the other two cases, regardless of the fact the victims were white, so were the culprits.  None of them were exactly destined to stir a rabble army.

The simple fact is that this is extremists feeding off extremists.  Both of which groups actually want to encourage conflict.  Hate is their very reason for existence.  Without it they would have no place in the world.  I'm sorry but you sicken me at BOTH ends of the scale.  Whether the call to violence is in the name of a poisoned interpretation of religion or a warped notion of "freedom", I really do not care.  Go have your pocket war somewhere else.  Leave the decent world alone.  Anyone who would trade on this tragedy is as vile as the perpetrators are insane.
